Here today I would like to show how I book my PC repair jobs as an On-site PC Technician. While I am not telling you that this is how you must do it, its a way that has worked for me over the years.
On a common work day, my clients usually start calling sometime after 9am. I can book the first on-site job for the day ; which might have been scheduled a couple of days ago, at around 11am as this permits an hour in office for answering calls, checking emails and 1 hour traveling time.
Any time a customer calls me, I’m going to ask them some extremely easy questions. Nothing too technical like “Are you getting a reboot loop?”, but instead something that they are going to see even though they do not know a thing about computers. For instance, I say something like “When you press the button, does it show the black screen with white writing, show the Windows XP trademark, then return to the black screen with white writing?” To a technician, we know that this is perhaps a “Blue Screen of Death” with automatic restart turned on, but we can’t ask the client if its a BSOD with automatic restart turned on, so I use the above technique based off what they see.
The reason why I ask my home PC repair service clients these questions is because it gives me a coarse idea of how long the job should take and permits me to book my day appropriately. A Blue Screen of Death could be anything from a dying drive to a straightforward driver issue, so I will doubtless allow 2-3 hours or so for this to account for the laborious Problems.
If a client called me and asserted My PC is dead, I would need to ask the question as though it had no power? No noise or lights whatsoever? If they are saying yes, then it is most likely going to either be a dead power supply or a dead motherboard, in which particular case I would only allow 1 hour for this job. If it is the power supply then I can test and swap that out pretty quickly , if its a dead motherboard then I’m going to run assorted tests on-site to approve it’s a dead motherboard and take it back to the workshop to replace it.
Now that I have a general estimate of how long my 11am job will take, I am able to book my next job about 12:30pm to 1pm dependent on driving distance from the first job. When the call for the 3rd job comes in I will usually give the consumer a ballpark time since there’s a chance one of the earlier jobs can take more time than expected, so I am going to say something like between 3 and 4pm. If there’s a fourth or fifth on-site job to do, I’m going to do similar with the ballpark time but if there isn’t any more call outs for the day, I’m going to go back to my workshop and do whatever is on my workbench.
This set-up enables me to be on time about 95% of the time and if I’m late, its no more than 15 minutes. If I’m going to be late and it’s more than ten minutes or thereabouts I usually call my purchaser and tell them.
It is important to do this because when someone is expecting someone to arrive at a certain time, they will stay waiting for you and they probably won’t want to start another task. If somebody stays in this readied state for too long, they begin to get anxious staring at the time and wondering where you are. Nevertheless if they understand you’re going to be late, they at least know where they stand with their time and can do something else while they wait.
When i am late that five pc of the time, I always say sorry for being late on arrival. It is important to respect the seriousness of other peoples time.
This is how we schedule our jobs for laptop virus removal and as I discussed earlier, this is not the classic way do it, its simply a way that works very well for our shop.

Are Refurbished Laptops Worth The Money?

Sometimes refurbished laptops might even be better than a brand new laptop. Affordability certainly points the way down this path.
There are those who believe a refurbished unit must be the same as cheap laptops but that is not necessarily so.
For example, think about the plight of refurbished cars. When I asked a friend about his own desires in refurbished cars here is what he had to say.
His response?

- 1964 – 1967 A C Cobra, 427 Cubic inch engine
- 1962 – 1967 Chevy Corvette, Coupe or Convertible
But, when trying to lead the pack using refurbished options may not be the right answer. When income is the focus a refurbished laptop gives you all you need.
This brings us back to our original question of refurbished models compared to new.
My answer, for the most part would be yes for several reasons.
• Guarantee
• Affordability
• Value
• Excellence
It is not the unit that needs to be in question but rather where that equipment was refurbished at.

Companies that provide refurbished computers would benefit greatly from providing a guarantee with their equipment. Many do.
Why?
Because a guarantee, even a 90 day guarantee, lets the buyer know that the company is willing to stand behind the product that they bringing to the market. Therefore, if support becomes necessary with the purchase the customer can know they are covered. Even if it is in prime condition and will last “forever” I personally would be wary of refurbished computers where any type of guarantee is exempt. If something goes wrong you have nothing to fall back on except a brand new computer purchase.
*** Affordability ***
This was something we addressed earlier. I’d say that if a refurbished laptop purchase is being considered, this one element can be the determining factor.
In most cases, refurbished units simply cost less than brand new devices. When your budget is the concern their are definite advantages to considering a refurbished purchase if it comes with a guarantee like I talked about above. Even better if they offer an extended warranty of some sort, generally speaking I avoid such options but not with refurbished computers.
*** Value ***
Affordability positions a refurbished device into more features than what can be found for the same price on brand new units.
This again depends on you and your individual circumstances. It is quite possible for you to just secure the basic necessities at a much lower cost than new, or if your pocket book will handle it you can get more value for less.
The bottom line here is that you have options that are opened up and made available which are not necessarily present in a brand new device because of the issues of expense.

Refurbished laptop and excellence in the same sentence, really?
Again it depends on the person or company providing the unit. However, it would be my own belief that those who want to receive referrals and future business for their efforts are going to do whatever they can to get people talking about their work. That is why selling computers which are not working right would be an extreme problem for their own future well being.
Companies that take this approach to business will do all they can to produce high quality products

I call this my GAVE approach because I GAVE myself a break while I GAVE myself the technology I needed within the refurbished laptops that I purchase. Why not be the one that GAVE you your own break?
